Overview

The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, providing them with skills critical to our national security and economic prosperity. The Gilman program broadens the student population that studies and interns abroad by supporting undergraduates who might not otherwise participate due to financial constraints. The program aims to encourage students to study and intern in a diverse array of countries or areas and world regions. The program also encourages students to study languages, especially critical need languages (those deemed important to national security).

Eligibility

Applicants must be:

• A citizen or national of the U.S.
• An undergraduate student in good standing at an accredited institution of higher education in the U.S. (including both two-year and four-year institutions)
• Receiving a Federal Pell Grant during the time of application and/or able to provide proof that you will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term of your study abroad program or internship
• In the process of applying to, or accepted to, a credit-bearing study abroad or internship program that is in a country or location with an overall Travel Advisory Level 1 or 2, according to the U.S. Department of State’s Travel Advisory System

Award

Awards of up to $5,000 are made for up to one academic year of undergraduate study abroad. Award amounts will vary based on student’s recommendation group in the selection process, their financial need, and length of program. Gilman Scholarship funds may only be used to cover eligible study abroad program costs and related expenses.
