National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship

The NDSEG Fellowship Program was established as an approach to increasing the number of U.S. citizens receiving doctoral degrees in science and engineering disciplines of military importance.

Overview

Applicants who are interested in furthering their education in the disciplines of military importance compete for Fellowship opportunities listed under DoD’s Broad Agency Announcements (BAAs) in research development. The broad research area disciplines include, but are not limited to the following: aeronautical and astronautical engineering, Astrodynamics, biomedical engineering, biosciences (includes toxicology); chemical engineering; chemistry; civil engineering; cognitive, neural, and behavioral sciences; computer and computational sciences; electrical engineering; geosciences (includes terrain, water, and air); materials science and engineering; mathematics; mechanical engineering; naval architecture and ocean engineering (includes undersea systems); oceanography (includes ocean acoustics, remote sensing, and marine meteorology); physics (including optics) and space physics.

The highly competitive Fellowship Program has awarded nearly 4,700 fellowships from over 70,000 applications to U.S. citizens and nationals since 1989. Selected Fellows can choose the U.S. Institution to attend for pursuit of their doctoral degree.

Eligibility

Applicants are eligible if they are a U.S. citizen or national and have received or will receive a baccalaureate degree in the year of their fellowship application, are within two years of their graduate study for a traditional program (1st or 2nd year), or within the first two years of a PhD in science and engineering. Must major in one of the STEM fields listed on the program website.

Award

The NDSEG Fellowship provides stipends, prorated monthly based on a 12-month academic year; stipend amounts are determined for each Fellowship class by the DoD. The NDSEG Fellowship will pay for the minimum health insurance coverage offered through the institution, up to a total of $1,400 annually. The NDSEG Fellowship will pay the fellow’s tuition and required fees (excluding room and board).
